#OSMP : Outstanding Social Media Personality

See who’s really trending on February 26th

A wise woman once said “Like so, like that”; one of the many trendy catch phrases from our favorite auntie Tabitha Brown, first recipient of the NAACP Image Awards Outstanding Social Media Personality (OSMP). We live in a world full of content creators where means of interactions among people create hashtags and slangs, as well as share and/or exchange thoughts and ideas in virtual communities and networks.  The NAACP Image Awards continues to recognize outstanding social media creators whose content amplifies our black culture and has positively impacted our black experiences throughout one or more social media platforms.

The OSMP category is so unique because it’s the only category where the nominees are hand-selected. Each nominating sub-committee member must submit five nominees for the award and this year over 40 names were submitted for consideration. Once names are submitted, the committee reviews all submissions and takes a vote to narrow it down to the five top scoring submissions. This year’s nominees are: Eunique Jones Gibson; Kevin Fredericks, also known as KevOnStage; La’Ron Hines; Lynae Vanee; and Terrell Grice.

Creator of ‘Because of Them We Can’ and Culture Tags, Eunique Jones Gibson is a creative visionary, cultural architect and social activist. Inspired by her sons Chase and Amari, Eunique started ‘Because of Them We Can’ as a 28-day Black History Month campaign highlighting iconic black history leaders from the past and present. Today the national campaign is now a movement reaching millions of people monthly with creative content demonstrating black excellence at its best.

Pulling up this year with his own “Stage Krew” is two-time NAACP Image Awards OSMP nominee Kevin Fredericks, also known as KevOnStage. The comedic content creator, playwright, director and filmmaker continues to build his empire through his streaming platform, KevOnStage Studios; created “for us, by us” providing opportunities for black creators and up-and-coming comedians to showcase their content and talents. Kevin is now taking his talents to the streets to show us What’s Good in the neighborhood with a new food travel series spotlighting Black-owned restaurants across the country. After being rejected by Hollywood numerous times, Fredericks’ perseverance teaches us to always be in control of your own destiny.

Are You Smarter host and viral Tik-Tok personality La’Ron Hines has fans raging over the popular segment Are You Smarter than A Preschooler. Viewers love watching the hilariously candid interview moments, quizzing preschoolers from his parents daycare center on random topics that most wouldn’t expect them to have an answer to. Gaining a half-million views within 24 hours of his first episode, Hines’ fan base grew quickly landing him an interview segment at the 2021 Golden Globe Awards.

“Keeping it Black but brief”, Lynae Bogues better known as Lynae Vanee will always deliver the parking lot tea. Every Friday this queen spills the tea during her infamous Parking Lot Pimpin series on trending cultural and sociopolitical current events. With a master’s in African American studies, Lynae Vanee spends hours researching the current state of today’s political climate; pushing her to use her platform to encourage honoring blackness, love, inclusivity, and to break down barriers of learned hate.

YouTube sensation Terrell Grice put the blue wall on the map with a YouTube talk show series The Terrell Show. Grice gives us “An Invitation to the Cookout” hosting culturally creative games with a twist and engaging conversations with celebrity guests including: eleven-time NAACP Image Awards nominee Ledisi and two-time NAACP Image Awards nominee Amber Riley. After recently celebrating one million subscribers on his channel, The Terrell Show continues to grow into a platform celebrating the works of an extensive repertoire of black voices.

Voting is now closed for Outstanding Social Media Personality and like all of us, nominees are anxiously waiting for the biggest night in Black Hollywood for the winner reveal.
